Introduction
 |
| Ms Diane Froggatt
|
With the permission of Ms Diane Froggatt, Silver Ribbon (Singapore) is proud to introduce Reason To Hope Family Education Programme, to Singaporeans, based on a new international approach to family self-help, based on Strengthening Families Together (2006) of the Schizophrenia Society of Canada and Strengthening Families Through Empowerment (2001-2006) of the World Fellowship for Schizophrenia and Allied Disorders (WFSAD).
It is structured education and multi-cultural support for families, developed and taught by families; it alternates between facts and feelings, and gives information and tools at the same time as it gathers input and ideas from the group. Families receive information about the illness, support for themselves, and skills in how to be an effective caregiver
Reason To Hope Family Education Programme was launched as a World Federation for Mental Health (WFMH) Program during the WFMH Congress in Athens in September 2009. Eleven person completed the instructor training at the second session, certified by Ms Diane Froggatt herself and one of them was Ms Porsche Poh, Executive Director, Silver Ribbon (Singapore).
To date, Reason To Hope Family Education Programme has been introduced to Tanzania, Uganda, Uruguay, Kenya, Canada, and finally, Singapore.
Founders
Ms Diane Froggatt and Ms Bridget Hough are both mothers of sons who developed schizophrenia in their late teens and early twenties. They have both occupied senior positions in family organizations supporting and advocating for families living with mental illness.
Before co-developing Reason To Hope Family Education Programme, Bridget was trained as an instructor in the United States course "Family to Family" and the Canadian course "Strengthening Families together".
Over many years, Diane had developed literature for families through her work with WFSAD. It was a natural progression to develop the present course of family education and instructor training, based on the previous work of both these women.
